Founded in 1969 as Tammy Lynn Center, TLC was started by three families who wanted better opportunities for their children with disabilities. What began as a grassroots effort rooted in advocacy, determination, and hope has grown into one of North Carolina’s most trusted providers of disability services and family support.
Today, 57 years later, TLC serves more than 2,000 children and adults and 4,500 family members each year through programs that foster growth, independence, health, and community.
This anniversary comes during one of the most transformative periods in the organization’s history.
Earlier this year, TLC dedicated its Raleigh campus following a $9.8 million investment. Made possible through support from the SECU Foundation and a coalition of public and private partners, the project represents a major milestone in TLC’s long-term vision to create more accessible, community-centered living environments for the residents who call TLC home.
The renovation included the construction of the new Collard residence, significant updates to the Tucker and Moore homes, and outdoor improvements designed to better support both residents and the direct support professionals who provide around-the-clock care. The updated homes feature wheelchair-accessible kitchens, private resident storage, expanded nursing support areas, high-capacity laundry facilities, and dedicated staff respite space.
The campus dedication brought together residents, families, donors, elected officials, community partners, and supporters to celebrate TLC’s continued investment in long-term residential care. More than a construction project, the transformation reflects the organization’s belief that every person deserves to live in a space that feels safe, welcoming, and built around their needs.
The milestone comes at an important time for families across North Carolina. More than 20,000 individuals statewide are currently waiting for I/DD support services, while many families continue to face limited long-term residential care options for their loved ones. As demand for services continues to grow, TLC remains committed to expanding opportunities, strengthening support systems, and helping individuals thrive throughout every stage of life.
Today, TLC provides a comprehensive continuum of care through three core service areas:
- Homes & Day Program: Safe, supportive residences providing total care, along with an adult day program, help individuals stay healthy while building skills, confidence, and connection.
- Therapies & Home-Based Supports: Multidisciplinary therapies, in-home services, assessments, and respite care help individuals and families thrive at home and in their communities.
- Care Navigation & Family Support: Tailored Care Management coordinates wrap-around supports and improves health outcomes for Medicaid recipients, while TLC Family Connect provides advocacy, service navigation, and access to community resources for families.
As the needs of individuals with I/DD continue to evolve, TLC is expanding its impact through innovative programs, strategic partnerships, and a commitment to meeting families where they are.
