Developmental disabilities are conditions that affect physical, learning, language, or behavioral development.

Raleigh, NC – March 2026 — As Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month begins, TLC, founded as Tammy Lynn Center, reflects on its commitment to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities  across North Carolina.

Developmental disabilities are conditions that affect physical, learning, language, or behavioral development. They include autism, cerebral palsy, intellectual disabilities, and other lifelong developmental differences. In 1987, Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month was created to promote inclusion, raise awareness of the barriers, and celebrate the achievements. Today, for TLC, this observance represents more than a national moment;  it serves as a reminder that inclusive communities are built through accessible services, thoughtful systems of support, and sustained community engagement.

Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month is about recognizing the individuals who strengthen our communities every day,” said Sarah Crawford, CEO of TLC. For 56 years, we have seen firsthand the resilience, talent, and leadership of people with developmental disabilities. As we expand, our focus remains on creating more opportunities, more access, and more inclusive spaces where every individual can thrive.”

Developmental disabilities affect families across neighborhoods, school systems, and workplaces. Approximately 1 in 6 children in the United States has a developmental disability. When accessibility and inclusion are prioritized, the benefits extend beyond individuals and families, strengthening communities.

As a provider serving more than 2,000 children, adults, and families each year, TLC continues to expand opportunity, access, and care, so individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities have the resources they need to thrive.

TLC stands alongside individuals and families — not only during March, but every day of the year.
